SRI MAHALAKSHMI STUTI

Subrapatham is a sthuthi ( stotra) submitting our “prarththana” to her to wake up from ” Paryankasanam” alongwith Sriman Narayanan, and to accept our poojas ( thrikala , panchakala poojas) and to hear our stotras describing the glory/fame/ kalyana gunas

Sri U./Ve. Vidvan Saralakavi, Padur puranam Raghavachariar swamy has adorned Sri Mahalakshmi in his Subrapatha Sthuthi”

With this preamble/ preface , adiyen attempts to tell this ” Sthuthi’ to you
Sri Alavandar’s excellent sthuthi on Sri Mahalakshmi is called ” Chathusloki”. Stotras like these came to pour in from such of these mahacharyars from the days of Sri Kulasekhara Azhvar, who gave “Shri Mukunda Mala” to us. This is first grantha in “stotra” style which has been followed and nurtured by subsequent mahacharyals like Shri Alavandar( Kindly see adiyen’s book Marupadiyum Piraviya? Bhagavanin Thiruvadiya? )
Shri Alavandar’s ” Chathusloki” is the first “stotra” on Sri Mahalakshmi( Piratti) afterwhich countless mahacharyals followed suit
Shri Alavandar exclaims:–
Oh, Sarvalokalokesvari!how can I say your fame. glory, mahathmym! They are all countless, limitless. But,your name is in one ” Akshra” i.e. ” Shri”
Hey, Mahalakshmi! Without your anugraha, nobody can get happiness either in this Universe, or in other worlds now and ever!
Hey, Piratti!even your Nayakan( Emperuman) does not know your greatness/ eminence/fame/pride just likeHe does not know HIs own. There was fear in my mind( because of countless sins)to observe surrender in your lotus feet. But after surrender I am relieved from the fear and with your grace, I am beginning to worship you by stotras ( Sthuthi)

Shri Bhashyakarar ( Shri Ramanujar), during ” Pankuni Uthram” day at Srirangam made absolute surrender
before the Divine Couple ( Divya thambathi–Namperumal& periapirattiyar) At that time He made ” Gadya thrayam” In His Saranagathi gadya He proclaims thus:–
Hey, treasure of countless kalyana guna, morethan equalising in gunas and giving everlasting happiness to Emperuman, having sudhha sathva sareera( sacred), having all worlds, all wealth on your own, directing all the creatures, clearing the sorrow of endless births and deaths of atmas who took refuge under your lotus feet, ever residing in the sacred chest of Emperuman, affectionate morethan a mother
hey, Periya piratti, who gives refuge to the souls who could not protect themselves and who desired to seek refuge under you, adiyen takes refuge under your lotus feet by surrendering myself and also giving the benefit of such suirrender to you

Shri Kooraththazhvan in his ” Sristhava” says briefly the important role played by the “Piratti” ( Sri Ranganayaki –Sri Mahalakshmi)as the mother of universe. Not only these, Sri Parasara Battar says in detail the important position accorded to Sri Mahalakshmias the Presioding Deity just like Emperuman( Sri Ranganathan) This is “mithunam”

This ” Mithunam” may protect us.

In ” Ahirputhnya Samhitha”, Sri Rudra says that Emperuman’s ” Ichcha sakthi” is Sri Mahalakshmi and ” Kriya sakthi ” is Sudarsana Azhvar. This Sri Mahalakshmi i.e. ” Ichcha sakthi” resides in the chest of Sri Emperuman called ” Vishnu Pathni”. She is dependant on Emperuman. She takes refuge on Emperuman. She is ” Seshee” to all “Jeevathmas” and also ” achits”. She is “seshaboothai” to Emperuman.( this is ekova seshithvam). This sakthi is inseparable from Emperuman. She is having permenant relation with Emperuman. All these mention that She is called “SHRI”
She is called “Padma” when She is having Prakruthi, kalam (time) and purushakara duly adorning “lotus garland”. She is called ” Vishnu Sakthi” when She is having ability, skill, strength, courage, excellence, etc of her husband. She is called ” Kundalini” as She shrings from Her Form( shape, body). She is called “Anahatha”, as She could not be known/identified through mind, word etc. She is called ” Gowri” because She is full of happiness and also She intrudes and resides as “subtlety”( Sooksmam) in the manthras with sudhdha sathva guna. She is called ” Athithi” when She is not dependant on Her husband. She is called ” Mahi” when She is having a large “form” beyond imagination and also She gives all punyas. She is called “Anaahatha seershani” as Her greatness and glory are beyond any limitShe is called ” Jagath Prana” as She stops breathing with Her abundent ” Gjana”( suppression of breath). She is called “Manthra matha”, as She is having fine and excellent “Form”. She is called “Gayathri” as She protects those who pray Her. She is called ” Prakruth” as She creates all including worlds through Herself. She is called ” Maathaa” as She intrudes and lives in everything. She is called “Shiva” as She looks after the welfare of all. She is called” Dharuni” as She is liked by one and all. She is called ” Dhara” as She helps to cross ” samsara”. She is called ” Sathya” ashe never changesher”form” / identity and fully relate to ” Sathyam”. She is called ” Santha” by vidvans. She is called ” Mohini”as She clears “delusion” She is called “Ita” as She is always in the Yajgna” to receive ” havis”. She is called “Rathi”. She is called “Visruthi” by ” Janis” ( intellectuals) . She is called ” Sarasvathi” as She gives memory power ( also Sarayanthi). She is called “Mahabaalaa”as She is having enormous “tejas”
She is having countless ” NAmas”( above very very few)as seen from Vedas, Sastras, ( giving different meanings to Her names). She is leaning with Emperuman.
As majestic as ocean , as greatness/huge as sky, as most powerful rays of sun, as cool as moon, , She is pervading fully and completely with Emperuman. She is “Sakthi” She is ” Narayani” . She is “Divya”
Ahirputhnya samhitha continues to describe Sri Mahalakshmi’s glory as above

Ahirputhnya Samhitha further says:–
Chitrasekharan@ Chitrasenan was the son of Uparisaran famous king of Bathravati. His valour was beyond limit. He conquered the entire world. There was ferocious war between him and Amarshanan an Asura on 17 times with no result. Chitrasenan wanted to get the anugraha of Shiva to defeat this Asura forwhich he proceeded to Kailasam. In the sky, his chariot could not go further and stopped. With the advice of ” Kubera” the king came to know that it was Sri Mahalakshmi’s place and that he should go and pray her.
Accordingly the king went to the “Parvatha” ( mountain) where he saw Sri Mahalakshmi took Her ” Thirumanjana theerththa” and praised Herwith words of salutation
” Hey, Mother, you reside in ” sooshumna ” an excellent place in Sri Vaikuntam, surrounded by ” Nithya sooris”. They praise you. You are called “Jaya”. You protect those who come to you requesting shelter/refuge. Your fame is very sacred. You are called ” Sathi”. You are called ” Suneethi”. You are Kumari. You are always praised by Sidhdhas, yakshas, vidyatharas. Indarn is praising you always. You are the meaning of ” Pranava”You are ” Manthra Swaroopini”. You are ” Pranava Swaroopini”All gnanis are always meditating you. You are head of all Vedas. Vedas could not describe your glory, because your glory is beyond description” Indra after these stotras get the anugraha of Sri Mahalakshmi

One ubhaya vedanthi , in it’s true meaning, from U.S. ( Bangaluruvasi) has aptly e–mailed stating that the name of Thayar denoted by ” Sri” gives six important meanings
i.e. shriyathE, shrayathE, shruNOthi, shrAvayathi, shruNAthi, sriNAthi.
1. Sri Mahalakshmi clears all our “doshas” and convert us , as loved one by Emperuman
2. Sri Mahalakshmi takes refuge with Emperuman always. She is always giving refuge to us.
3. She always acts as “suitable” with Her excellence, to take refuge by us
4. She hears our sorrows with utmost patient, sitting in the vlotuis
5. She tells our sorrows to Emperuman, in a way that His heart/ mind melts while hearing these
6. She reminds Emperuman what He said to Her to protect us

She is WORD ( Emperuman is the meaning of that word)
She is ” DHARMA” ( Emperuman is justice to this dharma or guiding principles to dharma)
She is the sound of “SVAHAA ” ( Emperuman is the meaning of this sound)

In a nutshell ( though it is not possible to minimise even by an ablest vidvan–who am I to attempt to giove in a nut shell)
“SRI” denotes wealth, beauty, prosperity, auspiciousness etc etc
” SRI” is the Empeuman’s chief Consert
” SRI” is the mother of Universe( all prapnacham)
“SRI” is worshipped by Brahma,Rudra, Indra, all Devas, and by all bakthas’
“SRI” is Periya Pirattiyar i.e.Rankanayaki thayar
“SRI” is Mahalakshmi
Mahalakshmi is “SRI”
“SRI” is the mother Goddess
“SRI” acts as mediator between us and Emperuman for our salvation
“SRI” is worshipped by all as “Divine Mother”
“SRI” accompanies Emperuman on all HIs Avathars ( Nrusimha Rama, Krishna etc) to earth
Emperuman is praised by Vedas, Sastras etc as “Lakshmidharan”, “Sreedharan”
Emperuman bears Mahalakshmi just jem bears it’s lustre, flower bears it’s fragrance> This is eternal relationship. Can you imagine a flower without fragrance? No. Like this, bakthas cannot imagine Emperuman without Mahalakshmi
Mahalakshmi is always ith Emperuman. This is delioghtful company/relation.
“SRI” is united like moon and moonlight with Emperuman.
Emperuman derives all , because of HIS “SRIPATHITHATHVA”
THe supremacy of Emperuman is based on HIs divine association with”SRI”.
“SRI” symbolises love of Emperuman and Mahalakshmi towards us ( jeevathmas) and love of jeevathmas towards Emperuman and Mahalakshmi
——————————

Sri Mahalakshmi Stuti–2

Hitherto, we saw the different meanings of ” SRI” and also it’s glory, excellence etc
Thaiththreeyam —Seekshavalli says
“Mathru devo bhava”, “Pithru devo bhava” ” Acharya devo bhava”, ” Athithi devo bhava” i.e. Treat mother as God, treat father as God, treat Acharyan as God, treat guest as God( simplest meaning known to all) But there is deep and different meaning in these If you say ” Mathru devo bhava”, remember Sri Mahalakshmi as ” Akhila jagan maatharam”, ” asmin maatharam”. If you say “pithru devo bhava” remember Emperuman( Boothanam avyaya Pitha–Sahasranamam says) as He is the everlasting Father to the entire Universe if you say “acharya devo bhava”, remember the acharya who initiated to “manthrobadesams” of all manthras, who taught ” Grantha Sathushtyam” through ” Kalakshepam” and who changed you as “prapanna”. If you say “Athithi devo bhava”, remember ” bhagavathas” In short, you should show affection and bakthi to “mahalakshmi”,” Emperuman”, ” Acharya”, ” Bhagavathas”. Amongst these four, Mahalakshmi’s “krupa” is most important and that is why, Seekshavalli says” Mathru devo bhava” first, followed by ” pithru devo bhava ” etc

A jeevathma gets relationship with a Sathacharyan with the “krupa”( Nirhethukakrupa) of Emperuman. Whereas a jeevathma gets the “dasya “&divine relationship with Emperuman by the “krupa” of Periya Piratti–Purushakara boothai. This benefit—-everlasdting benefit accrues through the purushakara act of Periya Piratti. The greatness and glory of ” Swaroopa roopa gunas” of Mahalakshmi surpass those of Emperuman
Sita ( Mahalakshmi)when She was in “ashoka Vana” pardoned and protected ” Raakshsis” who gave all sorts distress, hindrance, etc to Her, even without any request from them. But, Emperuman as Sri Rama , pardoned ” Kakasura”,,” Vibhishana” when theyu surrendered and prayed for protection. Emperuman gets the supremacy because of Mahalakshmi(sradhdhayaa devo devathvamuchnuthe).

Thiruppavai Jeer says in ” Aaraayirappadi”Beauty because of Her, all qualities because of Her, excellence, greatness honour because of Her, simplicity, lustre, etc because of Her, infact, if proved, all qualities are there because of Her to Emperuman.
Thirumazhisai Azhvar says:–
Apaanga bhooyamso yathupari parambrahma thathabhooth”
Who is ” Parabrahmam” ?Most of the “kataksha veekshanam” of Mahalakshmi fall on Empeuman . That is why Emperuman is Parabrahmam

There are sookthas which praise the glory of Mahalakshmi i.e. Sradda sooktham, Metha sooktham, Athithi sooktham, Vaak sooktham besides “Sri sooktham”
Sri Lakshmi thanthram is a part of ” Pancharaatra sastra. This exposes the glory, excellence, greatness, etc of Mahalakshmi to Indra by Mahalakshmi Herself. This thanthram contains 50 adyaayaas ( chapters). In the last adyaayaa, Mahalakshmi explains the greatness and fame of ” Sri Sooktham”
Laksmi thanthram elaborates the origion and exaltation of sri sooktham . not only those, but also, rishi,,chanthas, devathas, are explained.
sreeya;panchatha sarchchram thu srikaamas sathatham jabeth
Those who aspire abundent wealth should ever recite Sri Sooktham

Ya; srisooktham jaben nithyam rigbis thamarchchye chchriyam\
sri kaamo joohuyadhaknou padmire bilvise thathaapalai; \\

Those who requires wealth permenantly should do srisookthajabham daily. He should do archana to Mahalakshmi with these manthras. He should also perform homam reciting sri sooktham with the lotus flower/fruit of the bael tree(vilvam)

Let us try to say/hear/ read(study) and absorbe the divine and endless meanings of every Name of Sri Mahalakshmi from ” Sri sooktham”

APAKAAMINI

ANAPAKAAMINI           Denote Mahalakshmi

Lakshmi Thanthra says like this:–

Once a time, there was quarrel/enmity  between the sages ” Visvamithra” and “Vasishta”.  Visvamithra prayed Mahalakshmi . Mahalakshmi —-as ” Sarawathi  river  took Vasishta in water  and sweeped away  in flood( carried him in the floods). At that time,  other sages prayed Saraswathi river  to protect Vasishta from Her anger. Hence, She is called ” Apakaamini”

At the request of sages, She stopped to sweep Vasishta in the water-current.  Hence She is called ” Anapakaamini”

Om Anapakaaminyai  Nama:

This manthra will give all relief from all sufferings/dangers  when chanted

This is the 8th Nama in ” Sri Sooktham” This contains nine aksharas

Salutations to ” Sri Anapakaamini “

Mumukshoo should not ordinarily seek any material benefits/happiness  such as wealth etc,  because he gave up everything to become “ascetic”.   But, he can aspire  swarnam(gold), horse, cow, servants etc from ” Piratti” as he has top perform ” yagjnas”, bagavth, bhagavatha aradhana  forwhich these are necessary

3. Achva poorvaam  rathamadhyaam   hasthinaatha prabhothineem|

Sreeyam devimubhahvaye  sreer  maa  devee jooshathaam||

She will create “sound” as “horse” at the beginning, She will give sound  as “chariot” at the “middle”  and She will expose a sound as “elephant” at the end.  She is ” Shree”.  She is with adiyen . Adiyen requests Her to extend Her affection on adiyen

Lakshmi  thanthra  says  that Lakshmi resides in three places i.e. wisdom, Prana and  Sareeraa  When yogis in “yoga”  She is in the bottom of “Sushumnaa  Naadi “neighing  of a horse, , She is in the middle of sushumnaa naadi  exposing the  sound of chariot( when chariot runs speedily , it will spread some beautiful rytheme  -sound) and in the top of sushumnaa  naadi  She will give sound as an elephant(trumpet)

Achva   poorvo yasyaas saa

She holds Baghvan as first in jagath  srushti,  jagath  vyaapthi  chethanarakshanam .   In these duties ,  Piratti gives importance  to Baghvan and She follows Him

This ” Sareera” is a chariot.  She alongwith Baghavan resides in the middle of sareera  ( by the side of heart)

It can also be said that  in Baghavan’s “apraakrutha Sareera”,  She resides in the middle( Mangaiyurai maarbhan)

In the “Omkaaram”,  She is “Ukaaraa” in the middle.

Akaarenochyathe  vishnus sarvalokeshwaro  hari:|

Uththruthaa vishnunaa  lalshmeerukaarenochyathe sathaa||

makaarasthu dhayour daasa-ithi  pranava lakshanam||

Hasthinaatha prabhodhineem

It’s forest; forest of lotuses.  She resides in this forest in a beautiful lotus. Elephants are fond of lotuses.  Elephants expose a kind of “naatham” ( music) while worshipping “Piratti” in the lotus.  She hears, feels and enjoys that music.  Her “aasana” is a beautiful lotus( Padmaasini).  There are many elephants such as ” Iraavatham” ,  ” Kulkulu”, ” Kuranthakan”, ” Thamakan”, “Salilan” in this lotus, surrounding Her. She sleeps hearing the music sound of these elephants

These elephants are pouring sacred  waters through golden-potson Her ( Thirumanjanam)

Om  Achvapoorvaayai  Nama:

Om Rathamadhyai Nama:

These two manthras are having  eight akshras each

Om Hasthinaatha  prabhothinyai  Nama:

There are eleven aksharas in this

Lakshmi Thanthram  praises  the fame  of thses three manthras, which will  give all desires to “upasakaas”

These are 9th,  10th,  and 11th “Naamaas”in “archana” of Srisooktha Naamaavali

reviously, we saw that mumukshoo can aspire swarnam (gold), horse, cow, servants etc from ” Piratti”  as he has to perform “yajgas” etc

One Mahanubhava asked adiyen asto why  a ” Thapasvi” / Rishi/ should not pray for these, as he has to live and also to protect his family besides doing “agnihotram” etc

Yes, ofcourse, these are all there. In this connection adiyen has to tell a story

There were two sages before a long time. They were very poor. One thapasvi prayed Sri Mahalakshmi for wealth according to sastra for a very long period to get rid from the poverty but without result.

Other sage , though very poor, did not resort to this but he migrated to other area which belong to another king. To his dismay there were severe famine at that time and the King distributed each and everything to his people, thus becoming very very poor. The entire country was in the grip of famine and the King , on seeing this Sage , requested him to invoke the blessings of ” Varuna Deva” for rains . The sage, realizing the pitiable condition of people/cattle/trees etc  prayed ” Varuna” duly performing jabha etc according to sastras. Within a very short time there was very heavy rains. This sage prayed Sri Mahalakshmi for granting wealth to the king and to the surprise of all, Piratti gave abundent wealth to the King to protect the people/ cattle etc

The first Sage approached his acharyan and asked the reason.  His acharyan said that as a brahmin, he has to knock at the doors of the king of his country, for livelyhood and that brahmins/ sages/thapasvis should not resort to self improvement by invoking the manthras ,He  also explained that the jnana should be utilised for the welfare of the society at large that “Drona” though well-versed in all manthras  could easily invoked them to get milk to his child-son ( Aswaththaamaa) when he was very hungry but approached ” durupatha” to get a cow and that there were many examples in ” Ramayana” and ” Mahabharatha”

Sreeyam  Deveem

The meaning  to this is countless. Maharishis, Acharyas etc have tried to elobarate  and explain various meanings, but their efforts defeated. This proves that ” Sree” sabtha is having enormous and countless meanings. This is like ” Narayana” sabtha. But Bagavath Sastras chose six main/fundamental meanings to this ” Sree”. These six main meaningscomprise many many meanings. Bhagavan is having countless Kalyana Gunas, but He is termed as ” Shatkunya Paripooranan”.  In these six Gunas, all other countless gunasare absorbed. In other words, all countless Kalyana Gunasof Bhagavan are based on the main six Kalyana gunas.  Like this, ” Sree” comprises countless meanings, but all these meanings are absorbed in these six main meanings

Let us see now what are these six main meanings

1.  Srayatha    ithi Sree

She takes refuge with  Baghavan. She is solely, ever dependent on Him. She resides in His chest ever, even when He took “avathar” as ” Vaamana” ( Brahmachari)

2.  Sreeyathe   ithi  Sree

All chetanas, Nithyas, mukthas are solely dependent on Her,  like She is dependent   on Her Husband.  She is also ” Seshee” to Jagath ( Universe)

3.  Sreeyam  chru  himsaayaam

She destroys all faults/sins of chetanas .  When Jeevan prostrates and salutes Her, praying to forgive all it’s sins/faults, She readily does it

4.  Sroonotheethi  Sree

She hears the sorrows/ distress/ misfortunes of chetanas

5.Sreeyam  chru  visthaare

Duly advising chetanas, She increases manyfold the gunas of chetanas

6.  Sraavaya  theethi Sree

She induces Bhagavan to hear the sorrows of chetanas telling Him that no one is without a “sin” in the Universe and that He has to pardon all the sins of chetanas.  She is ” Purushakara Boothai”

There is a meaning to ” Sree” sabtha as ” Purushakaarathvena  Saranyaiya”

Those who is ” Purusha Kaaraa”   should  have link/connection  on both ends i.e. with Bhagavan and with chetana

Not only “Pancharatra”, but also Azhvar Sri sookthis, Chathusloki, Gathyathrayam, Sreesthvam, Sri gunarathnakosam etc sthuthis clearly vouchsafe these

” Sree ” continues

I hear an entreaty with distressed voice for protection(weeping voice) of chetanas. I destroy their sins. I increase their “gunas”.  For these, I am “Purushakaara boothai “

Sreeyam————-Lakshmi thanthram says “Sareeram cha harevasmi” I am the “sareera ” of Hari

Sreeyam—-She is ” dwaniswaroopa”

This “dwani” is called “santha” when it comes from the bottom of the stomach/ “pasya–ranthi”……when it comes from the navel, “proni” when it comes from the neck/throat,  “Srushti ” when it comes from the mouth

Sreeyam….Sree    denotes “sakaaram “,  “repam “,  ” eakaaram “

Sreeyam…..She gives “ishta prapthi ” and She does  ” anishta Nivruththi” and also She induces / lightens the power of Bhagavan of ” ishta prapthi ” and  ” anishta Nivruththi “

” Sreem “,  ” Hreem “,  ” Om ”  denote  ” Sree” ( Lakshmi )

Asvapoorva,  rathamadhya,  hasthinathaprabhodhini  , Sree…..four words are the sareera of Lakshmi.  If these “namaas ” are used  for jabha,  archana,  homam  as one by one,  two by two,   three  by three,  four,   this will give ” ishta prapthi “.  These four are gems
