GEMS FROM THE SCRIPTURES —January 2009
Bhagvan likes pilgrim centres by descending there in ”Archa” form, WHY ?
Jeevathmas come there frequently to worship Him . He wants to catch-hold of themby some means or other, because they are Hischildren. These children do not know that the earthly pleasures are always tinged with sorrow. Baghvan wants His children back to His Vaikuntam.
His stay in the pilgrim–centers is not an end in itself but only a means for the reclamation of His children ( all of us ) His ultimate destination is the heart–centre of spiritually regenerated bakthas. Once this is reached ,the means employed for reaching it get relegated. It is the turn of devotees to request Bhagvan not to relax. His interest in the pilgrim–centres which operate as the spring board whence Bhagvan reach the hearts of devotees and absorb them to His world.
At the same time , jeevathmas should also try to qualify themselves to invite Him intheir heart–centres forwhich ”samsara”to them is bondage. To get release from the bondage of ”samsara” we ( jeevathma ) have to take refuge at the lotus–feet of Sri Narayana which is the surest & easiest way. He is the sole refuge to those who are desireous of attaining His lotus-feet.
To take refuge at the lotus feet of Sri Narayanan ,we have to chant ”Thirumanthra” and ”Dvaya” after getting upadesam from an able Acharyan. No other qualification is necessary except chanting His holy name, the great manthra.
Thirumanthra: This is eight–syllabled, three words manthra ”Pranava”, ”Namaha ”, ”and ”Narayana ”
Of these three letters, ”Pranava” denotes Sri Narayana Himself the originator of the whole Universe and the Protector of all.It is the very first of all letters. It denotes Sri Narayana in close conjunction with Mahalakshmi.
Sri Narayana means the protector of one and all. The entire Universe constitutes His very body and as such , He is bound to sustain His body. He is the sole Architect of the Universe, combining in Himself in triple causes of creation the material , the opertive and the instrumental causes. He sustains all the worlds with their massive contents of things inside His stomach during the deluge and thus saves them all from being swept off and dismembered by the whirling of terrific depth and width. Then He spits them back into their previous positions quite intact .
Narayana- AYA–reveals the deep urge of jeevathmas to render service to Him in every conceivable manner, like that of Adisesha, who serves Him as umbrella, throne, foot–wear, bed etc etc . Sri Narayana reclines on Adisesha in the milk–ocean, the seat of His creative activity well within the the ear–slot of the appeal of ardent devotees , so as to fulfil His role as the Universal Protector.
Sri Nampillai, one of the Vaishnavite Acharya and who gave commentary on Thiruvaimozhi called as ”Edu Muppaththaaraayirappadi”
used to say thus—-
Even a tiny twig will come under the magic–spell of the charm of Archa form of Bhagvan and cannot resist the urge to serve Them
That is to say that even a very small twig cannot exist without serving Them. This is the urge which are deep and irresistable.
This deep and irresistable urge should be there in the minds of jeevathmas, in the hearts of jeevathmas to serve Them ever.. He is ”Madhavan” bearing Mahalakshmi on His winsome chest. This is highly enjoyable combination from the point of view of emanicipation.
Archa is the worshippable form of Bhagvan. It is sufficient if you chant ”Dvaya”, the gem of Manthras, a couplet, the first part of which enjoins that jeevathma should seek refuge at His lotus–feet through meditation of Mahalakshmi , while the
[11/18, 1:50 PM] Soundararajan: Mahalakshmi , while the second stipulates that service to Them , in a state of conjunction should be prayed for.
Thirumanthra will, by itself , confer on it’s chanters salvation and Dvaya—the gem-would likewise procure salvation, if is chanted always.
There are some guidelines to chant Thirumanthra , but in respect of Dvaya it is not. It can be chanted always.
In the name of ”Madhava”, there is a combination of both Thirumanthra and Dvaya with the redoubled efficacy keeping the chanters above all sins–past, present and future

GEMS FROM THE SCRIPTURES — (2) -February & March 2009
Adiyen wrote several articles under the above ”caption” in the religious English monthly ”SRI VEDANTHA DESIKA VIDYA” from January 2009
adiyen likes to reproduce these articles to you now
VEDAS: Vedas are the highest of the 14 subjects of study ( Vidyasthanams ). These Vedas should be understood through ”Ithihasas and Puranas.Vedas trembles with fear ,when it see the ignorant and half–learned persons because they will not give correct and proper interpretation. Ithihasas are most important to interpret the meanings of Vedas.
THRI GUNAS :Sathva, Rajas, Thamas are the ”three” qualities or constituents of matter. They affect the mind of a man, Sathva making it clean, rajas inducing passion, and thamas bringing dullness perversity and sloth
WORSHIP : We should worship Bhagavan with Bakthi. i.e with affectionate consciousness ( He is my Master and I am His Servant )by meditating ( Dyanam ) i.e. contemplating always on the various fine quqlities with a full mind to put an end to the sufferings of ”samsara”, by praising His qualities by reciting stotras, when the sareera ( body ) will be thrilled, eyes streaming with tears of joy and voice choked by bowing low, prostrating before His lotus–feet, uttering the words ‘all that is mine is yours, pleae take them ” by offering ”arghya”( a respectful oblation of water ) and by offering flowers, madhuparka ( mixture of milk, honey, local sugar , curd, and ghee )
Worship with love is the best. Bhagvan destroys with force all sins when we cry with loud voice, when we bow before Him,. He grants all protections when we worship with remembrance, when we meditate, when we adorn Him with flowers . Worship can be done at any time,at any place, even without purity. Stotra is superior to any other worship. This worship once commenced is not lost, though interrupted in the middle. Even a little worship though marred by imperfection in regard to place, time,or accessories, He is pleased as if it were perfect and complete.
What benefit is gained by ”Dyana” in Krita Yuga, by sacrifice in ”Tireta Yuga” and by worship in ”Dvapara Yuga”, the same benefit is obtained by recitation of His namas ( names ) in this ”Kali Yuga”.”Sankeerthana” and similar kainaryam are the best form of worship for the reasons among others :
1. The worship is dearest one and performed with ease.
2.No or little expense or exertion
3. Attractive, as the Bhagavan pleases
4.Secures the fruit of ”’Moksha”
5.No sin , if the worship is not in the proper manner
6.Suitable to all
7.Time, place , etc are not the criteria
8.No obstruction to attain the goal
All the Gods ,except Bhagvan , are impure, because they have been born in ”karma” and are subject to karma as they are in the grip of samsara. These socalled Gods ( Devadas) acquire the power only after worshipping Bhagvan, doing kainkaryams to Him, like sipping the holy water that was washed His feet etc.
Bhagvan is auspicious of all the auspicious ( Mangalanam cha mangalam ). Bhagvan is the GOD of all Gods i.e. Shiva, Brahma, etc etc. He is the highest Deity of unassailable rularship.
Fish lives in the holy ganga river. Flocks of birds reside in temples;even rats, cock–roaches, cats etc are there in the temples. But they are not benefited by the holiness of Ganga water, or of the temple, as they have not the necessary state of mind.
BHAGVAN: Baghvan Vishnu is the highest God with incomparable and unassailable rularship.Sri PurushaSooktha, Sri Narayana Sooktha, Upanishads like ”subala”, ”maitravania”, ”mahopanishad”, ”chhndokya”, ”Taittriya”, ”Katopanishad”, ”Sathvika puranas” vouchsafe this. Sages Parasara, Vyasa, Valmiki say this. The Agamas which are in conformity with the Vedas say this. All 32 Vidyas say this in clear terms.
BHAGVAN VISHNU : He is Lord of Universe and rules all the worlds. All without any exception depend on Him.He is sinlless. He is free from old age. He is ”shatkunya paripoornan”. He is fully perfect. He is full of beneficient qualities. He is the Father , Mother, Brother, the House, the Refuge, the good–hearted Friend, and the ultimate goal.
Vara Purana says :– If there is a person blessed with a life as long as that of Brahma ( four headed creator ) and endowed with a crore of tongues and a mind pure and clean , such a person may , perhaps, able to enumerate a thousandth part of Bhagvan’s qualities or may not.
Matsya Purana says :–Innumerable are the qualities of Bhagvan as are the gems hidden in the ocean.
Vishnu Dharma says :–The qualitesof Bhagvan who is devoid of qualities like Sattva or Rajas of Prakriti cannot be described by all the groups of Rishis. Vedas and other Authorities cannot adequately describe Baghvan. His names Forms and activities which constitute all the source of Knowledge concerning Him , are not within the range of measurement uttering of even one of His holy namas is potent to grant all benefits. Such a name becomes equivalent
to ”Manthras” like twelve–syllabled ( Pranava, Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaaya ) or eight –syllabled ( Pranava, Namo Narayanaya ) or sixth–syllabled (Pranava, Namo, Vishnave )
Names of Bhagvan even if pronounced merely and without knowledge of their meanings will give delight to mind and purity to heart. Bhagvan understands all the meanings ,though the pronouncer does not know this and Bhagvan grants all His anugraha on the pronouncer , if the names are pronounced with absolute faith and dedication. Baghvan Mukunda is seated on a seat of garlands of pearls, in the region of the milky ocean with the sand shining by the light from the pure gems . He is adorned by pearls transparent like crystals.
Baghvan Vishnu has the three worlds as His body. The earth is His feet and the sky is His navel. Wind is His breath. Sun and moon are His eyes. Directions are His ears. Heaven is His head. Fire is His face. Ocean is His abdomen. The entire Universe with the diverse kinds of gods, men birds, cattle , serpents, gandharvas, and daityas ( Asuras ) are within Him. He is resting on Adisesha. He is the embodiment of peace. He is the colour of clouds and Lord of Mahalakshmi. He is attainable by yogis in their hearts through contemplation. He is the destroyer of all fears of samsara. His chest is marked by a mole known as ”SRIVATHSA”. His body is resplendent with the ”Kausthuba ”gem
